Tonight the Chiefs, Officers and members of the PWFD gathered to honor the brave and unselfish actions of members of various Nassau County Fire Departments including Port Washington Firefighter Jack Wolin for his life saving actions!
Probationary Firefighter Jack Wolin has been awarded the Nassau County Fire Commissions EMS Citation.
Congratulations Jack!
On Sunday, October 7, 2018 at 2022 hours the Port Washington Fire Department was alerted to respond to an activated Carbon Monoxide Detector. At the time of alarm Probationary Firefighter Jack Wolin was present in the Recreation Room of the Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company located at 25 Carlton Avenue in Port Washington. Upon notification of the alarm PFF Wolin immediately reported to the apparatus floor and opened the overhead doors to both the Rescue and Engine bays. Immediately upon opening the second door PFF Wolin was approached by a female that had just parked a vehicle, exited the vehicle and was screaming that her husband was choking and needed CPR. PFF Wolin immediately approached the male and quickly realized that the male was unable to speak, cough, or display any signs of being able to breath. PFF Wolin immediately took action and began to administer the Heimlich maneuver. In the interim the wife of the aided had made contact with 9-1-1 operators via cell phone however due to panic and lack of familiarity with the neighborhood she was unable to communicate her location and other pertinent information to the operator. Simultaneously while conducting the Heimlich Maneuver PFF Wolin remained calm and was able to talk the female through reporting the location by telling her to tell the operator “Atlantic Hook & Ladder – 25 Carlton Avenue – Port Washington”. After numerous attempts the obstruction to the male aided airway was eventually dislodged and the aided began to vomit. Once the aided stopped vomiting and began to breathe, PFF Wolin took the cell phone from the aided wife and relayed the remainder of the information to the 9-1-1 operator and requested that a Port Washington Fire Department ambulance respond to the location. A Port Washington Fire Department ambulance was quickly on scene and took charge of the patient who was transported to Northwell Manhasset in stable condition. At this time PFF Wolin resumed his duties and responded to the original alarm that was transmitted.
It is the opinion of the undersigned that had it not been for Probationary Firefighter Wolin’s quick thinking, composure, and immediate actions this incident could have had a far worse outcome. ... See MoreSee Less

Last night the officers and members of the Port Washington Fire Department attended the 2019 Citizen of the Year ceremony honoring Firefighter/Ex-President Frederick Falconer, Jr.
for a lifetime of outstanding volunteer service by the Port Washington Community Chest.
Falconer was born and raised in Port Washington and has lived all his life on our peninsula except for the two years he spent on active duty with the U.S. Army in Germany. Falconer sets an example of the Community Chest’s motto: “The People of Port Helping the People of Port.”
For 46 years, he has been devoted to helping our community through his volunteer service with the Port Washington Fire Department, Flower Hill Hose Company. He has bravely fought fires in town and has served on the Flower Hill Hose Company Board of Directors as President and board member.
Falconer has been a devoted member of the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, the United Methodist Church, CancerCare, Business Improvement District, PYA and PAL, often serving on their boards of directors.
He was proudly Grand Marshal in the 2016 Pride in Port Parade, and he was honored by the Port Washington Senior Citizens Center in 2013 for his exemplary service.
Falconer is a third-generation owner of S.F. Falconer, Florist. Through his extreme generosity to many local nonprofit organizations, he has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the strength of Port Washington.
