At 22:07 on September 2nd, 2011 the PWFD was activated for a General Alarm House Fire on Sousa Drive in the Village of Sands Point. The first fire units to arrive found the home to already be fully involved with extension to two neighboring homes. Chief Cole (8500) immediately transmitted a SIGNAL 10 (Working Structure Fire) upon arrival and requested mutual aid from neighboring departments.

Four fire departments worked together for over six hours fighting the fire back to the first home where it was extinguished. This was a lengthy operation with fire units remaining at the scene until 03:48 the next day. According to the Nassau County Department of Assessment the home was over 80,000 square feet. The County Fire Marshall’s Office is conducting an investigation of the origins of the fire.

A second working fire was toned out at 01:17 on September 3rd, 2011 on Oaktree Ln in the Village of Flower Hill. This alarm occurred while the first fire on Sousa Dr was still being fought. Williston Park Assistant Chief 8602 transmitted the SIGNAL 10 for this location. Standby units from the Albertson Fire Department, Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department, Plandome Fire Department, and Williston Park Fire Department extinguished the second fire.

Both the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department and Roslyn Highlands Fire Department sent tower ladders directly to Sousa Dr and later Oaktree Ln. (8724, 8713, 8744,  596)

The Roslyn Rescue Hook and Ladder Fire Co. #1 sent an engine to Sousa Dr to supply the MLFD’s tower ladder with water. (566)

The Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company, Alberston Fire Company, Plandome Fire Department, and Williston Park Fire Department provided standby units at Atlantic Hook and Ladder Co. #1 and later responded to the Signal 10 at Oaktree Ln.

The Glenwood Fire Company provided one ambulance to the scene.

The Jericho Fire Department was toned out for a mutual aid engine.
